New COVID-19 Legislation — and How Your Business Can Handle ItYi Jin
The COVID-19 pandemic has totally changed our lives. We’re wearing masks, cutting our own hair, canceling weddings, and teaching our kids at home.
For businesses, the changes are equally drastic. Managers have reconfigured entire workplaces to ensure proper social distancing. Many employees are still working from home in industries where it’s possible and, where it’s not, large bottles of hand sanitizer stand ready at every entranceway. Zoom meetings have become the norm, while watercooler conversations are a mere memory.
“Just when we’ve all gotten a handle on all these changes, it appears that more may be on the horizon”
And just when we’ve all gotten a handle on all these changes, it appears that more may be on the horizon, presenting a logistical nightmare for many businesses and organizations.
Legislative Changes on the Way
Just this month, California passed legislation designed to protect California’s workforce in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic — and similar changes may be headed to other states that are also grappling with ways to get a handle on the pandemic. These changes include:
- Expanding access to workers’ compensation, making it easier to obtain for first responders, health care workers, and people who test positive for COVID-19 due to an outbreak at work
- Ensuring timely notification of any employees who may have been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 in the workplace
Protecting our Workforce
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed this legislation into effect on Sept. 17, with a statement explaining the intent behind the measures:
“These two laws will help California workers stay safe at work and get the support they need if they are exposed to COVID-19.”
“Protecting workers is critical to slowing the spread of this virus. These two laws will help California workers stay safe at work and get the support they need if they are exposed to COVID-19.”
While every business owner wants to protect their employees, the question is what additional extra efforts will these legislations require — and how can employers get them done as efficiently as possible?
How Additional COVID-19 Regulations Affect Employers
California’s new legislation will require businesses to keep records of all COVID-19 cases in order to provide the necessary information to the Division of Workers’ Compensation.
It will also require businesses to have the ability to notify employees within just one business day if they have been exposed to COVID-19 in the workplace.
For business owners and human resources managers already stressed with the increased burden of safeguarding their workplace, this new legislation will require extensive record-keeping. Some businesses may hire additional people to handle the new workload while others may outsource the task. Both options are costly and less than ideal.
The good news is that technology provides us with a better solution.
An Effective Way to Manage It All
While there are many different approaches to handling life in the workplace during a global pandemic, there is one that stands apart from the others due to the total solution it provides.
The Turing Body Temperature Thermal Scanner is an effective and affordable way to protect both your employees and your business.

Available in either single-person or multi-person models, the Turing Scanner begins with a quick health-screening questionnaire completed on an employee’s smartphone. The employee then stands in front of the scanner, which takes their temperature while detecting whether the employee is wearing a mask. If they are cleared, the scanner generates a badge which permits them entry into the workplace.
And that’s just the beginning of what the Turing Scanner can do.
Record Keeping Made Easy
Under California’s new legislation, the real challenge begins when an employee tests positive for COVID-19. At that point, two things must happen. The employer must provide all records to workers’ compensation and also notify anyone who has come into contact with the infected employee — within just one business day.
“The real challenge begins when an employee tests positive for COVID-19.”
Here, too, the Turing Scanner can make a daunting task simple. That’s because the scanner connects with a data access management platform that enables the archiving of COVID-19-related employer data, including:
- Responses to health questionnaires designed to meet guidelines put forth by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
- Records of the mask-detection status of employees
- Records of temperature screening
- Contact Tracing Capability
All of this data can easily be exported by an administrator to comply with the new legislation. There’s no searching for paper records, contacting an employee’s department to request information, or making phone calls to double-check an employee’s status.
Instead, everything needed is instantly available.
These records are important for another reason: Across the country, pandemic-related lawsuits are on the rise. It’s critical, therefore, to maintain extensive records detailing what you have done to keep your employees safe.
The Turing Scanner Makes Doing Business Easy
The Turing Scanner is already being used by more than 600 organizations across the country, including Coca-Cola, Costco, American Eagle, and Safeway — just to name a few.
For those concerned about security, the Turing Scanner offers additional advantages. The scanners comply with all FDA Safe Harbor regulations and use the Enterprise Class Linux operating system, which is regarded by experts as one of the most secure operating systems available on the market.
