Amazon reports nearly 20,000 COVID-19 Cases

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, businesses across the world have grappled with one very important question: How can they continue to function while keeping employees as safe as possible?

That question has played out dramatically at Amazon, which has reported more than 19,000 cases of COVID-19 amongst its 1.37 million employees.

Amazon claims that its rate of infection is actually below that of the general population. But many warehouse workers and labor advocates insist that Amazon is not doing enough to keep employees from getting sick — and the company has been slammed in the media for a lack of transparency and oversight.

On Oct. 4, a group of protestors marched to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Beverly Hills mansion. One of the protestors, Andrew Lewis, said the following to the Los Angeles Times:

“When a multibillion-dollar company is subjecting its employees to substandard working and safety conditions during a global pandemic and, as a result, transmitting COVID-19 to 20,000 employees — it goes beyond negligence. Amazon is far and beyond the wealthiest corporation on the planet. They have the resources to keep their employees safe and healthy, and actively choose not to.”

It’s the exact scenario businesses are desperate to avoid. The question is how?

The Complaint Against Amazon

By now, we all know it’s impossible to totally prevent the spread of COVID-19. Most of us recognize there is an element of risk to reporting to work, just as there was even before this pandemic began.

But we do expect our employers to do everything within their power to keep us safe — and we also expect clear and direct communication regarding the risks we take.

Many employees and labor officials claim this was lacking at Amazon.

For starters, Amazon did not disclose how many of its workers had been infected by the virus until early October.

NBC News reported that it interviewed 40 Amazon employees from 23 facilities who said that “many of the safety measures Amazon enacted at the start of the pandemic are either no longer active or difficult to enforce.” These workers went on to say that “without more detail from Amazon it was difficult to make informed decisions about the safety of coming into work.”

Some of these Amazon employees even began tracking COVID-19 cases in their facilities themselves through Facebook groups and spreadsheets.

A Better Way to Protect Your Business

This pandemic has presented business owners with two major challenges. The first — and most important — is how to keep employees safe. The second is how to protect the reputation and future of their business from claims that they have not operated safely.

The Turing Shield effectively addresses both of these concerns.

It does this by combining artificial intelligence and thermal imaging technologies to safeguard the workplace through four very important functions — all integrated into one easy-to-use and affordable system. Those functions include:

  • A 30-second health screening done on employees’ smartphones
  • Highly accurate non-contact temperature checks in a fraction of a second
  • Mask detection done at the same time as the temperature check
  • Contact-tracing done quickly and efficiently from a centralized platform

Here is a quick video on how it works.

The Turing Shield gives business owners and managers the peace of mind of knowing that they are using the best technology available to protect their employees — and are in line with all recommendations and guidelines put forth by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Should an employee test positive, the Turing Shield also offers quick and effective contact tracing, done from a centralized platform. There are no emailing supervisors to find out who was where and when. There’s no pouring through timesheets or stacks of paper. Instead, all of the information needed is available in an instant.

Finally, the Turing Shield offers protection against pandemic-related litigation, which is on the rise. Not only will businesses be doing everything possible to protect their employees, they will also have detailed records to prove it.

The Turing Shield at Work

The Turing Shield is designed to fit seamlessly into the workplace. It’s available in either single-person or multi-person models and operates independently, leaving employees free to do the work they were hired to do.

Employees take the 30-second health screening on their smartphones, which generates a QR code that the Turing Shield scans before doing a simultaneous temperature check/mask detection. The Turing Shield then generates a badge clearing the employee to enter the workplace.

The Turing Shield is already being used by more than 600 businesses across the United States, including Coca-Cola, Costco, Safeway, and Alaska Airlines.

It’s not clear what systems Amazon had in place to protect its employees — or how effective they were.

But it is clear that Amazon is now playing catch-up in an effort to right the ship and restore its reputation. The company pledged to spend $4 billion of its second-quarter profits to keep employees safe amidst the pandemic.
